The Cream Tea Diaries

The Cream Tea Diaries

I’ve mentioned Grandma before, she’s a bit of a legend. One of her favourite things in life is cream cakes and she’s also the Queen of all things scone. It’s her recipe I use for scones and that I teach all of my pupils because…

Instagram post 2184505235753832355_9909751 Stir up Sunday - the day you traditionally make your Christmas Pudding but as we’re not hosting this year a Christmas Cake it is.
.
L has already declared she’s decorating it so be prepared for a garish mountain of Christmas sprinkles and a festive unicorn.
.
This year we soaked the cake in Tanqueray Sevilla Gin for a citrus kick and will continue to feed it until the marzipan goes on in a few weeks.
.
Have you done any festive baking this weekend?

Instagram post 2154763797923287676_9909751 It’s all in the detail.
.
This weekend L requested to make a cake for all of her family. She had a particular cake in mind.
.
A layered chocolate sponge cake sandwiched with raspberry jam and vanilla buttercream. Then topped with pink glacé icing and an unholy amount of sprinkles, some chocolate fingers and the pièce de résistance - a hand crafted marzipan unicorn that quite frankly looks like it’s having a sugar high.

Instagram post 2122815149119565375_9909751 Well what a summer holiday that’s been. The six weeks have seen big changes and we’re adjusting to our new normal.
.
L tuned five, I started my new job, I faced a long standing fear and got on a plane for a great family holiday in France.
.
My new job is going well. I work with a great bunch of colleagues, every day is different and so far the job is working well for us a family.
.
Stepping away from the food sector after a decade has been the right decision. When you’re immersed in food and something that was once your hobby becomes your job it can smother it. The whole saying about if your hobby becomes your job you’ll never have to work a day for the rest of the life hasn’t been true for me. Now I’ve made the changes my desire to be in the kitchen and create for the love of it is slowly returning.
.
Today I’ve spent most of the day in the kitchen baking and making. No pressure, no deadlines, just for us.
.
I haven’t turned my back on food completely in a professional sense, it’s just now more likely to involve public health, policies, welfare, labs and occasionally salmonella...

Instagram post 2117637165974625075_9909751 We’re nearly home after a great week at Les Gets in the French Alps. L’s first time on a plane and (thankfully) she loved it and as we flew in to Geneva she ticked off both Switzerland and France in one day.
.
🥐 lots of pizza, ice cream, raclette and croissants, baguettes were consumed.
.
🏖 A lovely afternoon braving the mountain lake at Lac des Écoles.
.
🐐 Popped to a random village, Les Lindarets, overrun by goats on the way to Avoriez. Weather was terrible this day so we abandoned the adventure for rum crepes & Irish coffee back at Les Gets.
.
🏊🏻‍♀️Swimming at Morzine. Not the warmest of days but I still managed lengths of a freezing cold outdoor Olympic-sized pool.
.
🛶 canoeing at Lac Montriond and walk to Cascade d’Argent near there. Lovely hot day. L has requested a canoe so we can paddle again. Cheaper than a horse I suppose...
.
🏔 ski lift up and walk down Mt Chéry.
.
🎢 luge in Morzine. I was rubbish at this and got stuck!
.
🚵‍♀️ Hubs & @mjpicks raced down the runs on mountain bikes and remarkably didn’t sustain any major injuries.
.
🎒 I was mean to parapet yesterday but they cancelled last minute as double booked. Next time.
.
❄️ L has now declared she wants to return for snow.
.
A successful holiday I think!

Instagram post 2090284640049237142_9909751 It would seem I have a thing for wild flowers. After yesterday’s fawning over Calke Abbey’s flora, @ntkedlestonhall has stolen the winning crown.
.
Derbyshire really did look beautiful today as I celebrated my one-year-closer-to-40 birthday.
.
After the school run I ran the 5k along Kedleston’s Long Walk to test my new Garmin (thank you Fiona, Mike & Ruth) with hoards of bright blue damselflies and butterflies darting amongst the grass for company.
.
I then sat down in the pleasure grounds in between these sunning swathes of flowers with a picnic for one.

While enjoying the beautiful summers day one of my favourite birds, a tiny wren, hopped over to say hello.
.
I spent nearly two hours sitting in that deckchair with an iced coffee in hand, people watching and not moving for a while. Pure heaven and a pretty great way to spend a birthday.
