Byron’s Big 10th Birthday – Intu Derby
We’re not really one to eat in chain restaurants but one Hubs makes an exception for is Byron and they opened their Intu Derby arm of the business in 2015. Fair to say it’s Hubs favourite place to eat in Intu Derby. He finds it very hard to resist one of their burgers, loaded fries and salted caramel milkshake. We even have the Byron cookbook on our shelves at home and some of the recipes are often replicated here at home.
You could argue burgers are iconic comfort food. They often appear on our weekly meal plan in various forms. Byron started back in 2007 with the simple mission to do tasty burgers well. Something that wasn’t common place a decade ago. The food scene is now rather burger mad, but Byron is still top in our eyes.
When the invite for me and a +1 to attend a special event at Byron Derby to celebrate their 10th anniversary and National Burger Day there was no chance of me having my +1 as anyone else but Hubs. On the night we sat with lovely fellow Derbyshire blogger – Sticky Beak and her husband. We spent a good few hours eating, chatting, laughing and comparing some of the best (& worst) places to eat in Derbyshire and Staffordshire.
To celebrate their 10th birthday through July & September Byron has brought back six of their favourite burger specials. On the event night we got to try the Gizzmo burger (originally launched for Movember back in 2011) by the lovely Gizzi Erskine. Think a burger topped with welsh rarebit and possibly one of my favourite Byron special burgers to date.
Of course you can’t go to Byron just to eat the burgers. We’re not usually ones to go for starters(puddings always win) but enjoyed the chicken nuggets. We then accompanied the Gizzmo with our all time favourite Byron side – cheese and bacon loaded fries, oh loaded fries. Why have normal fries when you can top them with cheese sauce and bacon? Pure comfort food and a dish I could happily scoff all on their own.
All of this was paired with Beavertown Brewery Byron Little Furry Animal IPA especially created for Byron’s 10th anniversary. I’m not usually a beer drinker, but as Hubs was driving I felt it my duty to give it a try. I really enjoyed this light ale.
We then finished the night with a slice of Oreo cheesecake. In fact I swiped the last slice in the restaurant that night. I only wish I had worn something with a more expandable waistline.
How will you be celebrating National Burger Day?
Byron invited us to their 10th birthday event where they covered the bill. All words and opinions are my own. Come on, we weren’t going to turn down the opportunity to have a night of great food at Byron!
